Some moments stand alone

by Beth Havens

Some moments stand alone outside of time
Holding hostage your heart and your mind
These times perhaps occur quite often these days
As turmoil and disorder seem the ordinary way
So disregard my heartache, don’t worry of my fears
The carnage that lay before me, make trivial my tears
Yet a moment out of time of seemingly disconnected events
Returns my minds eye to the views had from my tent
Where wine and hawks and silly childish games
Reverberate against the memory of flames.
Clear sky darkened in moments with roiling blackened ash
My heart feels just as black.
I can’t seem to shed the tears gathered in my brain
Can’t seem to recognize the difference between the candle and
the flame
I just stand in this moment watching shadows against the
night
Remembering the roiling fire and blackend ash that dimmed
broad daylight
