Girl Guide

by Cateline de la Mer

Way way back in the
mists of memory
way back in a pastel haze
the voices that coloured my world
like watercolours on paper
they said
"girls are you listening?
Always Share And Be A Friend"

So I tried
and through the years
as life and time scrawled over
acrylics and markers and oils obliterating
delicate watercolours
I have shared everything
I have given my very core
in the name of love and friendship
I am left with a canvas I do not recognize

Maybe those voices from
the blurry impressionist past
maybe the mottos were wrong
maybe they should have given
us the spraypaint
and let us proto-women make our
own rallying cries
find our own voices
mark our own canvasses as we saw fit
maybe there is more to this
than giving giving giving
